The Challenge
Fragmented Merchant–Customer Engagement: The client operated a loyalty rewards model where merchants issue points to customers on every purchase and distribute digital coupons to drive repeat business. However, there was no unified digital platform — merchants tracked points manually, customers had no visibility into their balances, and coupon distribution relied on print and SMS with no tracking or analytics.
Points Economy Without Digital Infrastructure: The core business model — earning points per purchase, redeeming points for product value or claiming alternative products — required a real-time digital ledger that both merchants and customers could trust. Without it, disputes over balances were frequent, redemption was slow, and the entire points economy lacked transparency.
Three Distinct User Experiences Required: The platform needed three separate but interconnected applications — a Merchant App for issuing points, managing coupons, and viewing customer activity; a Customer App for checking balances, browsing redeemable products, and making purchases; and an Admin Panel for managing the entire ecosystem, onboarding merchants, configuring reward rules, and monitoring transactions.
Payment Gateway Complexity: Customers needed the ability to use points as partial or full payment, combine points with online payments, or pay entirely via payment gateway. Integrating a payment gateway that could handle hybrid transactions (points + cash) while maintaining PCI compliance and transaction reliability was a significant engineering challenge.
Scalability for Growing Merchant Network: The platform needed to support a rapidly growing network of merchants across different business categories — each with unique reward structures, coupon types, and redemption rules — without requiring custom development for each merchant.
Our Solution
- Merchant Mobile Application: Built a dedicated Android and iOS merchant app enabling real-time point issuance to customers at the point of sale. Merchants can create and distribute digital coupons, view customer purchase history, track which coupons drove repeat visits, and manage their reward configurations — all from their mobile device. The app includes QR-code-based customer identification for instant point crediting.
- Customer Mobile Application: Developed a consumer-facing mobile app where customers can view their points balance in real time, browse available coupons from enrolled merchants, discover redeemable products, and make purchases using points, payment gateway, or a combination of both. The app features push notifications for new coupons, points earned confirmations, and personalized product recommendations based on purchase history.
- Centralized Admin Control Panel: Built a web-based admin dashboard for platform operators to manage the entire ecosystem — merchant onboarding and verification, reward rule configuration (points-per-rupee ratios, bonus multipliers, expiry rules), coupon campaign management, transaction monitoring, dispute resolution, and comprehensive analytics covering points issued, redeemed, expired, and revenue generated.
- Hybrid Payment Engine: Engineered a payment processing layer that seamlessly handles four transaction types — full points redemption, full payment gateway transaction, split payment (partial points + partial cash), and coupon-discounted transactions. Integrated with a leading payment gateway for secure online payments with PCI-DSS compliance, automatic reconciliation, and real-time settlement confirmation.
- Configurable Rewards Engine: Designed a flexible rules engine allowing administrators to configure per-merchant reward structures — points-per-purchase ratios, bonus point campaigns, time-limited multipliers, category-specific earning rates, minimum redemption thresholds, and points expiry policies. New merchants onboard with default configurations and can be customized without any code changes.
